Regular Cleanings Keep Washers and Dryers Sparkling

May 09, 2014 // Franchising.com // Just because your washing machine is regularly filled with detergent and water doesn’t mean it’s clean. Residue from soiled clothes and soap can accumulate over time. In some cases, the wet environment can encourage mold growth and produce an unpleasant smell. The dryer, too, needs some regular attention.

The Maids, the only franchised residential cleaning service to clean for health, offers these tips to keep the often-overlooked laundry-room appliances tidy.

Washing Machine

Commercial products are available to clean washing machines, but a less expensive, green method works just as well. First, remove the soap dispenser and clean it with a vinegar and warm water solution. If the dispenser is coated with soapy residue, soak it for several minutes to loosen grime. Use the same water/vinegar mixture to wipe clean the rubber seals around the door to eliminate gunk and mold. Return the clean dispenser to the machine. Begin a wash cycle and fill the machine with hot water. Stop the cycle and add at least two cups of vinegar to the water. For machines that have never been washed or have a musty smell, add up to a quart of vinegar. Let the water/vinegar mixture sit so the vinegar has time to dissolve any grunge. After about an hour, restart the machine and complete the wash/rinse cycle.

To maintain the clean, about once a month run a wash cycle with hot water and two cups of vinegar. To prevent mold growth, always remove clean, wet clothes promptly. Let the machine dry out by leaving the door slightly ajar after laundry duties are complete.

Dryer

To freshen the clothes dryer, use a water/vinegar mixture and a soft cloth to wipe down the inside of the dryer. Never use an abrasive cleaner. Clean the lint screen after each cycle. Use a long-handled brush to remove any debris from the screen housing. Once a year, clean the vent tube of lint and other debris. See the appliance manual for safe, do-it-yourself directions.
