TruGreen Helps Florida Homeowners Control the Damaging Spiraling Whitefly

Memphis, TN (PRWEB) May 15, 2014 - The spiraling whitefly has invaded many parts of central and southern Florida, causing significant damage to palms, trees and shrubs. TruGreen, America's number one lawn care provider, offers Florida homeowners a solution with long-term control to help protect palms, plants and shrubs from this damaging insect.

What is the spiraling whitefly?

The spiraling whitefly is similar in appearance to a small moth. Most likely originating from Central America, the spiraling whitefly can gather in such great numbers that entire colonies of whiteflies can emerge when an affected plant is shaken. This whitefly is particularly adapted to feeding on many types of plants including gumbo limbo, black olive, and Brazil beautyleaf trees; also palms such as areca, coconut, and foxtail, and birds of paradise shrub.

How do I know whitefly has invaded my yard?

The underside of plant leaves are covered with white, waxy material and the top with excessive black sooty mold. The sooty mold can accumulate on uninfected understory plants, mulch, gravel, concrete, automobiles and even on the surface of water. Another clue to watch for is a spiral-shaped pattern of white eggs on the underside of plant leaves. The type and level of damage (leaf damage, leaf drop, branch dieback, decline, etc.) will be dependent on the type of plant.

"South Florida is especially susceptible to foreign insect pests," said Erica Santella, Florida Region Technical Manager for TruGreen. "Spiraling whitefly is very easy to spot and can be controlled if the infestation is caught and treated quickly by a professional."

What can be done?

When insects feed on plants, it puts the plants under stress. Therefore, proper watering and fertilizing is important to keep the tree as healthy as possible.

Call a professional tree and shrub company that is experienced with Florida pest protection. A tree and shrub specialist will be able to properly identify that the damage is from the spiraling whitefly. Once the problem is identified, a specialist can perform either a tree trunk injection or targeted soil applications depending on the type of plant affected. Both options are effective in quickly eliminating the spiraling whitefly.

The good news is that in most cases, the spiraling whitefly will not kill healthy, large trees and palms. However small, newly planted or unhealthy plants with extremely high infestations could possibly die if not treated quickly. Visit TruGreen.com to learn more about the spiraling whitefly and to schedule an appointment with a Florida pest expert.
