School of Rock Turns it Up with Battle of the Bands Competition at Summerfest

Leading Music School Franchise Transforms Student Performers into Rockers at Second Annual GEMBA

BURR RIDGE, Ill. - June 05, 2014 - (BUSINESS WIRE) - It's every aspiring musician's dream to perform live on stage in front of thousands of people, especially at a music festival that brings together the industry's hottest stars. This summer, School of Rock, the national leader in performance-based music education, is turning that dream into a reality and giving hundreds of students a chance to play their hearts out on stage at Milwaukee's Summerfest, known as "The World's Largest Music Festival." Young musicians from around the country will have their fifteen minutes of fame as they duke it out in a School of Rock "Battle of the Bands" competition titled GEMBA.

Fifty-nine bands comprised of over 500 students will be participating in the GEMBA competition on June 28 and 29, 2014. Student performers from 32 schools will be traveling to Milwaukee all the way from Canada and from 15 states across the nation. They will be joined by over 1,000 friends and family members who will cheer them on as they compete for the top honor of being named the best of the best.

"With our student participation doubling in size since last year, we're thrilled to be able to offer this once-in-a-lifetime rock star experience to even more of our talented, dedicated student performers," said School of Rock CEO, Chris Catalano. "I'm looking forward to witnessing the excitement and energy our students will undoubtedly bring to the Summerfest stages, and I can't wait to see which house band will be crowned champion."

The performances will be judged by world-renowned musicians: Carl Restivo (Rihanna, Tom Morello); Damon Ranger (Oscar Winner, Life of Pi); Dimitri Coats (Off!); Earl Slick (David Bowie); Greg Corner (Kill Hannah); James Williamson (The Stooges); Jimmy Chamberlin (The Smashing Pumpkins); Metal Mike (Halford); Rich Redmond (Jason Aldean).

"Summerfest is a festival like no other and a place where unforgettable live music memories are made for both the musicians and the hundreds of thousands of attendees," said John Boler, Chief Marketing Officer at Summerfest. "These fine young School of Rock musicians are about to find that out in a big way, firsthand, and it will be nothing less than fantastic on every level!"

School of Rock creates a supportive and motivating environment that inspires its students to rock on stage and in life. By hosting the "Battle of the Bands" event called GEMBA, a Japanese word for the "real place," students will have the chance to share their talents with a real live festival audience.
