Taco John's Cleans Up with New Restaurant Competition

July 15, 2014 - Spring cleaning is an annual ritual for most restaurants. But this year Taco John's® is taking it to a new level. The Mexican quick service restaurant chain has created the Silver Cup contest – a competition to find the cleanest Taco John's® in America.

"Our guests expect a clean dining experience. If they don't find it at Taco John's®, they will look for it somewhere else," Says Jeff Linville, CEO for Taco John's®. "We want this contest to the "white glove" approach to the entire restaurant, inside and out."

According to a recent report from the Mintel Group, cleanliness is the most important consideration when consumers are deciding which restaurant to visit. Taco John's® locations that competed for the Silver Cup were asked to not only thoroughly clean the inside of their restaurants but also work on the outward appearance, for example – adding new mulch in flower beds, painting the building or putting down new lines in the parking lot.

"Summer is our busiest season and we want to impress our guests," Says Shawn Eby, Vice President for Operations at Taco John's®. "We want our restaurants to go to the next level and really enhance the guest's experience."

The Silver Cup competition started locally. Winning Taco John's® restaurants advanced to state and regional levels. Eventually, a restaurant in Longmont, CO and another in Forest Lake, MN, went head-to-head for the national title.

Judges for the final round included Linville, Eby, Bob Karisny - Vice President for Menu Strategy and Innovation at Taco John's® and Jim Creel - Chief Financial Officer. Restaurants received one point each time a judge found something that wasn't picked up or cleaned. Like a game of golf, the lowest score wins.

In the end, the Taco John's® in Longmont, CO came out on top, winning the first Taco John's® Silver Cup.

"We are extremely proud of Todd Geatches and his team. They are a great example of Taco John's® at its best," Says Linville. "Not only is their restaurant clean and inviting, they are also very generous to their community. Last year Taco John's® of Longmont supported local flood relief efforts and donated generously to the Yellow Ribbon Fund. This year, they are promoting STOMP Out Bullying – building community support for the leading national anti-bullying and cyberbullying organization for kids and teens in the United States."
