Wild Birds Unlimited Presents Live Streaming Barred Owl Cam with Intimate Glimpse into Nesting Season

National Backyard Bird Feeder Asks, ‘Hoo’s the Next Viral Sensation?’

CARMEL, Ind. - March 26, 2015  - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Wild Birds Unlimited, the original and largest franchise system of backyard bird feeding and nature specialty stores, is partnering with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to re-launch its live Barred Owl Nest Cam to help bird enthusiasts connect with nature and learn more about spring nesting season.

“Our annual Barred Owl Nest Cam is a great opportunity for children, teachers and nature lovers to learn about and witness the nesting process of these amazing birds,” said Jim Carpenter, founder and CEO of Wild Birds Unlimited. “We encourage families to make this a learning opportunity, and try to spot specific behaviors they may see on the cam from mom, dad and the owlets.”

Through the live streaming video, which can be found on AllAboutBirds.org, wbu.com and the Wild Birds Unlimited Facebook page, everyone can watch one of nature’s most endearing bird species. There’s opportunity to witness the mama owl incubate her eggs and see them hatch, observe mealtimes as the owlets grow, and witness the owlets exploring before they fledge from the nest.

For the past 16 years, Jim Carpenter, Founder and CEO of Wild Birds Unlimited, has hosted a camera-equipped owl box in his wooded backyard in central Indiana. Set more than 30 feet high against the trunk of a pignut hickory tree, the box was home to a series of occupants throughout the winter, including squirrels and raccoons.

The young owls will leave the nest after four to five weeks and remain in the branches of the nest tree until they are able to fly at around 10 weeks. Siblings will stay together throughout the summer and are fed by their parents. Finally, the young will strike out on their own in late summer when the adults slowly wean them from feedings.
