The Greene Turtle To Open In Winchester, Virginia

Ownership Group Behind Kernstown Commons, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and Other Local Businesses Will Bring Popular Casual Dining/Sports Bar Concept to the Shenandoah Valley

April 21, 2015 // Franchising.com // HANOVER, Md. – The Greene Turtle Sports Bar and Grille announced today that it will open a new franchise location in Winchester, Va., later this year. The family-friendly, sports-themed casual dining restaurant will debut in the Kernstown Commons retail center that currently features an Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and a Country Inn & Suites By Carlson.

GT Winchester, LLC Partner, Lisa Limoges, says, “We’ve been great fans of The Greene Turtle for many years and are confident it’s going to be an exciting and wonderful addition to the Winchester community.”

Once open, the restaurant will feature all of the ingredients that have long made The Greene Turtle a favorite destination for families, sports fans, foodies and friends. These include local and professional team paraphernalia incorporated into the décor, a legion of large-screen overhead TVs broadcasting all the day’s sporting events and smaller screens in each booth that allow guests to get closer to the game or tune in to a selection of kid-friendly programming, a popular menu of comfort food standards, proprietary favorites and crab-based specialties reflecting the chain’s Maryland roots, and a bar that serves up a mix of mainstream beers and featured craft selections, as well as specialty and standard cocktails, soft drinks and more. Limoges says Winchester should embrace the concept, as residents often find they have to head closer to Washington, D.C. to access restaurants with such broad appeal.

“Residents in the Winchester area are very mobile and many travel to Maryland and Northern Virginia on a regular basis. Since the Greene Turtle is well-represented and well-respected in these areas, we felt that Winchester would be a natural location for the brand to expand,” says Limoges.

As it does in each market it enters, The Greene Turtle will also continue its tradition of community outreach, supporting local youth sports teams and engaging in fundraising and other charitable activities. The chain’s “Funds for Friends” program, through which individual locations arrange to donate a portion of a day’s proceeds to groups in exchange for their encouraging members, friends and family to dine at that site on specific dates, has already provided well over $1 million to a long list of local organizations.

Setting Up A Southern Expansion

Kernstown Commons is located in Winchester, just off I-81 exit 310. According to Tom Finn, The Greene Turtle’s Vice President of Franchising, opening there amounts to establishing a beachhead upon which to mount expansion into several other key markets.

“We’re very excited about our franchise agreement to expand The Greene Turtle into Winchester,” he says. “We’re adding a formidable group to our increasingly sophisticated corps of franchisees, and we’re securing a strategic vantage point from which we hope to expand south to Harrisonburg, Lynchburg, Roanoke, Blacksburg and over to Charlottesville.”
