School-Age Students Thrive In Afterschool Programs

Founder of Discovery Point Child Development Centers® offer tips for evaluating options

August 10, 2015 // Franchising.com // DULUTH, Ga. – Summer will be over soon, which means millions of parents turn to trusted caregivers for their family’s afterschool needs.

Yet with 23 million U.S. parents working outside the home, only 10.2 million kids are in afterschool programs, according to the Afterschool Alliance, an afterschool awareness program based in Washington, D.C. That means millions of latch-key kids spend hours home alone every day.

Statistics, however, show that “students participating in high-quality afterschool programs went to school more, behaved better, received better grades and performed better on tests compared to non-participants.”

So what should working parents consider when looking for quality afterschool programs?

According to Cliff Clark, founder and CEO of Discovery Point Child Development Centers®, quality afterschool care should include the following:

  • Safe environment
  • Qualified staff
  • Good teacher-to-student ratios
  • Excellent adult-child interaction
  • Varied activities
  • Quiet time

“Education professionals agree that afterschool programs are one of the most effective ways to engage children in enriching activities and enhance their education,” Clark said. “Just as importantly, these programs give peace of mind to moms and dads during the out-of-school hours.”

Each year, thousands of families rely on Discovery Point Child Development Centers to oversee their children’s afterschool endeavors. Afterschool programs include help with homework, down time to rejuvenate, age-appropriate crafts and activities, and technology time.

In addition, at many Discovery Point Child Development Centers®, safe, state-approved transportation from school to the center is available. Afterschool activities are tailored with each child’s interests in mind.
