National Dog Day ‘Begs’ for a Spotlight on Pet Parent Spending

Pet Supplies Plus Determined to Answer Demand, Adds 15 New Franchise Partners to System

LIVONIA, Mich. - August 26, 2015 - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Approximately 60 percent of every dollar in the $58 billion pet industry is spent on man’s best friend. With 54.4 million households claiming a dog as part of their family, annual spending is continuing to rise to colossal heights and pet retailers are expanding at an unprecedented rate to cater to the constantly growing needs of pet parents.

As the nation’s largest pet retail franchise, Pet Supplies Plus continues to expand its presence by partnering with qualified franchisees eager to enter the pet industry. So far this year, the retailer has welcomed 15 new franchisees to the system for a total of 19 new locations in the pipeline. Newly signed agreements will bring the neighborhood pet stores to new and underserved markets including Nashville, Atlanta, Houston, Jacksonville and Denver.

“We are looking forward to expanding our unique shopping experience to new markets and bring more convenient locations to pet owners in our current areas,” said CEO Chris Rowland. “While we grow, we are focusing on building the proper infrastructure along with it to ensure that we are not just opening new stores, but we are growing the right way and will continue to deliver the best experience and products to our customers.”

A recently signed franchise deal inked in the Denver market with Colorado native Gary Reiber II will mark the westernmost Pet Supplies Plus location. Executives with Pet Supplies Plus expect the brand’s targeted growth strategy in Denver will bring 10 new stores to the market over the next five years. For continued expansion, Pet Supplies Plus is also currently seeking qualified single and multi-unit owners in Atlanta, Houston, Memphis, Minneapolis, Nashville, Raleigh, St. Louis and Tampa.

To break down barriers for potential franchisees, Pet Supplies Plus announced earlier this year a reduction of royalty fees from 4 percent to 2 percent for the first 12 months of a new franchise agreement. Following a franchisee’s first year, the royalty fee will remain at 3 percent for the life of the franchise agreement. Initial investment levels range from $549,400 to $1,097,400.

Currently, we are gearing up for tailgating events that will be held at our stores this September and our annual Halloween costume parades in October.”

Consumers are expected to spend more than $330 million on pet Halloween costumes this year.
