DreamMaker Welcomes New Franchise!

DreamMaker welcomes Michael Aukerman and Jason Derouin (French, pronounced Der-win,) into the DreamMaker family!

March 25, 2016 // Franchising.com // This father-in-law and son-in-law duo are strengthening their familial ties by becoming DreamMaker franchise owners. Finished with training, the two will open doors for business soon in Northeast Suburban Chicagoland. The territory includes the primary areas of Vernon Hills, Libertyville, Lake Forest and Deerfield.

Jason, the son-in-law, became interested in the remodeling and construction industry when he was around 3 years old.

“I started climbing ladders and swinging hammers at the age of three. It has been a love and passion since,” Jason said. His father is a finish carpenter and started including Jason in home remodeling projects. “My first carpentry project was helping my dad build a fence in our back yard,” said Jason. “I learned a great deal of my skills from him and spent time working with him on smaller side projects.”

He used those skills working for a mobile home repair company before working in the residential construction industry. “There, I learned some basic framing skills to complement my knowledge of finish carpentry, along with came a good knowledge base of plumbing and electrical skills. Just before the housing bubble burst, Jason worked 10 years as a mobile refrigeration technician for a truck-leasing company in Milwaukee. Then, along came DreamMaker.

“It has been a dream of mine to be part of something bigger for quite some time now and that dream is finally coming true,” said Jason. He also is working to become an associate National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) designer.

Mike spent most of his career in the automobile industry, working in several areas for Volkswagen, Saab, and General Motors. He was national Franchising Manager for Saab, and in 2010, received the SAAB Cars USA “Bob Sinclair Award” as “National Employee of the Year.”

“I love the franchising aspect of business,” said Mike, who now works for General Motors as Senior Manager for Dealer Relations. Mike oversees approximately 800 dealers in a program to help dealers sell cars directly to customers over the Internet.

He continues to work this job from his home, while Jason will run the majority of the DreamMaker franchise. “I also have a degree in finance, and substantial marketing experience,” said Mike, “so I will handle these areas for us.”

Both Mike and Jason enjoy making others happy through remodeling, particularly when they can see the smiles of their customers after they have a newly transformed space which restores the beauty and functionality to a home.

Their families played a huge part in this decision to join the national DreamMaker franchise. Together, Mike and his wife, Debbie, have seven children, including Dana, who is married to DreamMaker co-owner Jason. Dana also is a podiatrist. The couple have a toddler daughter, Olivia.

“Dana is Jason’s daily inspiration,” said Mike, who loves spending time with their only grandchild. Mike and Debbie’s other children include: Lisa (husband, Eric), Matt (wife, Jessica), Garrett, Katie, Griffin and Alex. They are especially excited that two more grandchildren are on the way.

When Mike and Jason are out of the office, you can find them spending time outdoors or with their families. Mike and Debbie enjoy traveling and are especially fond of Jamaica, Hawaii and the California Wine Countries of both Napa and Santa Ynez Valleys. Although he enjoys quiet activities such as gardening, bird-watching, wine-tasting or watching college football, Mike and his wife have been known to fly a glider and take a hot air balloon ride.

Jason enjoys hunting, golfing, cooking and traveling. He also likes learning new skills or trying that new bottle of wine everyone is talking about.
