Survey Finds Nearly Two-Thirds Of Americans Create Favorite Outdoor Memories Right In Their Own Yards

Homebodies Become "Yardbodies" in Warmer Months with Americans Spending an Average of 12 Hours per Week in Their Yards during the Summer

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - May 3, 2017 /PRNewswire / - Spring is in full swing and Americans are headed outside to make lasting memories, but they are not going far for family fun. From backyard barbecues to family flag football games, many Americans prefer to enjoy the great outdoors at home. A new survey conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of TruGreen finds that nearly two-thirds of Americans (65% or 162 million*) report that some of their favorite outdoor memories have occurred right in their own yards.

While the survey found that some Americans may be "yardbodies" instead of homebodies in warmer weather, spending an average of 12 hours per week in their yards during the summer, much of that time may be spent working to maintain their lawns. Americans say that they or someone in their household spend an average of seven hours each week caring for their yards.

Other key findings of TruGreen's Spring Survey include:

  • Signs of Spring: 87 million* Americans (35%) consider flowers blooming to be the first sign of spring, while 42 million* (17%) feel getting their yard ready signals the beginning of the season.
  • Seeing Green: 69% of Americans say having a green, healthy lawn is important to them and 32% admitted to sometimes being embarrassed by the state of their lawn.

"We love that people are living life outside and creating memories right in their own yards," said TruGreen President and CEO David Alexander. "As America's number one professional lawn care provider, we have the expertise and experience to take the work out of time spent outside so that homeowners can have even more time to enjoy those special outdoor moments with families, friends and neighbors."
