Veteran Puts Military Experience to Good Use at Corporate and Franchisee Level at Dental Fix Rx

  • Name: Matt Lau
  • Dental Fix Rx Employee Since: October 2012
  • Franchise Service Area: Treasure Coast, Florida

November 08, 2017 // Franchising.com // Before becoming Director of Operations and a franchisee for Dental Fix Rx, Matt Lau served in the U.S. Air Force for more than 20 years. Many of his family members served in the army, but Matt wanted something more technical. After retiring from the Air Force as a Biomedical Equipment Supervisor, Matt started a dental equipment repair company. He then looked into the Dental Fix Rx and realized his skill set was a perfect fit for the fast-growing brand. Not only did he become part of the corporate family at Dental Fix Rx, but he also became a franchisee in Treasure Coast, Florida, with his business partner Andre.

DFX: As the Director of Training for Dental Fix Rx, what are your main responsibilities?

Matt: From the time a person signs their contract, it is my responsibility to make sure they are trained in all aspects of the business – from technical, costumer relations, financial management/planning and overall business management. One core value we’re taught in the military is the importance of continuing education. When I first came to Dental Fix Rx, I wanted to emphasize the importance of ongoing training, instead of just initial training. We provide our franchisees a month of pre-training to learn general business processes and business management expertise. Then, we have three weeks of classroom and hands-on training. It used to be very theoretical, but we continue to consistently improve upon our training. It’s much more hands-on and technical now.

DFX: How has your background as a veteran helped you with Dental Fix Rx?

Matt: One of my first projects with Dental Fix Rx was to reach out to our vendors to create an ongoing training program to help our guys get the knowledge they need to be the best in the business. I feel veterans would appreciate the culture of teamwork we have created. They don’t just view their customers as a paycheck, but truly get to know them, as well as their staff, to learn their needs and how they can help them. We’re all in this together, and by working together we all succeed. One source of pride for me is seeing a veteran succeeding in the company. I truly feel as though he or she is a member of my family.

DFX: What similarities exist between serving in the military and being a Dental Fix Rx franchisee?

Matt: Just like the military, we have created a path to success, and all our franchisees have to do is follow it. We also have our support system, an ongoing training program and uniform. We are also the only brand in our industry that has a certification system that allows us to “earn our stripes” and show our customers that we are continually getting better. Our five-star franchisees act as mentors/trainers to newer franchisees to help them transition successfully into the business.

DFX: Why is Dental Fix Rx a good fit for veterans?

Matt: We are all used to having a roadmap to success and someone to mentor us along the way. Dental Fix Rx has created a very similar system, and all we have to do is follow it. In the military, you don’t have the flexibility you have as a business owner, however. As a franchisee, you get all the benefits of a proven system, with the flexibility to try new things that you come up with along the way.
