Home Care Assistance Donates a Year of Care Services to Youth Caregiver in Palm Beach

Who Cares For Family Members With Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s and Cranial Nerve Disorder

Home Care Assistance pledges to donate $52K in care services to help 15-year old youth caregiver for one full year.

April 26, 2018 // Franchising.com // San Francisco, CA - According to the American Association of Caregiving Youth, more than 1.3 million kids between the ages of eight and 18 in the United States care for a parent, grandparent or sibling with a disability or illness. Most of these children remain a hidden population, struggling quietly with depression, anxiety and sleep deprivation as well as concealing their hardships from others.

Jonathan Gutierrez is one of those youth caregivers. As the only able-bodied person in his home, Jonathan is responsible for taking care of his mother who has Multiple Sclerosis, his grandmother who was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and his younger brother who suffers from a rare Cranial Nerve Disorder.

The Palm Beach 15-year old recently talked to HBO’s VICE News Tonight about his life and duties as a youth caregiver. The video, which aired last month, received over 1.9 million views across the globe, catapulting a national conversation around the burdens of youth caregiving and the lack of social services available to support these types of caregivers.

Today, Home Care Assistance, North America’s leading provider of in-home care, has made a pledge to donate a full year of care (approximately 52 thousand dollars worth in home care services) to help support the Gutierrez family. Home Care Assistance will provide 40 hours of care to the Gutierrez family every month, for one full year, starting in February 2018.

“After learning about Jonathan’s story, we were immediately drawn to help in whatever way we could,” said Beth Brown, President and Owner of Home Care Assistance of Palm Beach County. “Being the mother of three children, Jonathan’s story really hit home. We hope that this donation will not only help relieve some of the burden Jonathan faces in his role as a caregiver so that he can focus on his academics, football and enjoy being a teenager, but will also help shed light on the larger issues surrounding youth caregiving.”
