Former Education Policy Pioneer Aims to Create Independent Thinkers

Kumon Math and Reading Center of Beacon to Fill a Community Gap as a Local Supplemental Study Option

July 05, 2019 // Franchising.com // BEACON, New York - Lydia Chan is no stranger to the education sector. After receiving a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Teacher’s College, she served as an employee of the New York City Department of Education for years. During that time, she worked on several initiatives - one of which was to pioneer the Special Education Policy Reform, which aimed to integrate special education students into the general classroom. When she and her husband started a family and moved out of New York City into the suburban town of Cornwall, New York, Lydia took notice of the lack of supplemental study options in the area for her growing daughter. It was then that she saw an opportunity to fill that gap for area families while continuing to pursue her service to education. Today, Lydia is the proud owner of Kumon Math and Reading Center of Beacon.

“Homework shouldn’t be a difficult task for students, but it unfortunately is for many,” said Chan, owner and Instructor of Kumon of Beacon. “I hope to eliminate that issue in the community as well as to be a part of cultivating Beacon’s ongoing speedy growth.”

In addition to Lydia’s education policy background, she’s also been teaching piano since the age of 18. When she made the decision to open her own Kumon Center, she quickly found her two passions have a core fundamental similarity.

“Teaching the piano requires you to build the concept from the ground up,” said Chan. “Kumon is no different, as an instructor must individualize the program for each student to achieve their ‘just-right’ level of study.”

Kumon works to instill qualities of academic independence, confidence, and ability to master materials years beyond grade level in each student. Kumon Math and Reading Center of Beacon is the only location in the surrounding area, which made for a great franchise opportunity for Lydia. Kumon is an ideal small business for professionals from all communities and regions, as there is an available start-up cost assistance and a large network of support to lean on. Kumon Franchisees must also have a four-year college degree, be proficient in math and reading, have investment capital of $70,000 and a net worth of at least $150,000.
