Self-care tips help caregivers manage the emotional, mental and physical pressures of the career

With over 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day, the need for caregivers is more important than ever. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the overall employment of home health aides and personal care aides will grow 41% from 2016 to 2026, which is faster than the average growth of all other occupations combined. According to AARP, approximately 43.5 million caregivers have provided unpaid care to an adult or child, and 34.2 million Americans have provided unpaid care to an adult age 50 or older. 1. Share your experience: Today there are millions of caregivers providing care for their loved ones. It’s important to build a network with other caregivers who are also managing the same daily challenges as you. Consider joining an online support group or organization where you can share some of your learnings with others.
2. Take a break: Stepping away from your responsibilities as a caregiver can be difficult, but caregivers deserve time to relax and rejuvenate. Not only will this time off benefit you as the caregiver, but experts say both you and your loved ones will benefit if you take it.
3. Prioritize your health: To best care for others, you must care for yourself. Many caregivers face increased rates of physical ailments and increased tendency to develop a serious illness. A healthy diet and regular exercise can be simple ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle. And in stressful times, meditation and yoga can be very beneficial.
4. Know when you need help: Caregiving can be stressful, especially when you are also caring for other family members and managing a career. Studies show that 26 percent of caregivers say the work is hard on them emotionally. Respite care can be a great option for those looking for extra help caring for their loved ones.
