Former Engineer Joins Husband to Inspire Marietta Students

Kumon Parent Aims to Create Future Leaders through the Opening of Kumon of Cumberland - Terrell Mill Road

September 05, 2019 // Franchising.com // Marietta, Ga. - Lila Basco comes from a family of educators. She may have decided to take a different path, but after three decades of working as an engineer, she was ready for a change. Her two sons were thriving on their own - one a neurologist, and the other completing a master’s degree in financial engineering at a prestigious university.

Her kids were always ahead of their class, something that Lila attributes to their time spent enrolled in the Kumon Math and Reading Programs. In fact Lila’s husband, John, was inspired to open a Kumon Center of his own in 2004 after seeing their success and has since fostered academic independence for thousands of area students.

Lila spent a lot of time helping as an assistant at his center, where she witnessed firsthand what individualized study can do for a child. One case stuck with her - a five-year-old who refused to speak. The shyness was affecting her performance in school, thus prompting her parents to enroll her at John Basco’s center, Kumon of Vinings - Smyrna. After months of working through the reading program and building the child’s confidence, she was speaking to everyone and anyone, and her performance in school soared. The experience, along with many more like it, helped Lila to decide the change she needed was right in front of her. She has officially joined her husband in fostering a love for learning in the Marietta community, and is now the Owner and Instructor of Kumon of Cumberland - Terrell Mill Road.

“I have experienced firsthand how amazing Kumon has been for so many families, and how it truly changes lives,” said Lila Basco, Instructor of Kumon of Cumberland - Terrell Mill Road. “The Kumon Method is powerful, and develops not only strong academic ability, but also a sense of confidence and accomplishment in the student.”

Kumon is an after-school enrichment program that is designed to unlock the potential of students around the world. The individualized method focuses on each student’s “just right” level of learning, which often results in the mastery of materials far beyond grade level. Many students enrolled in Kumon experience a growth in academic independence, confidence, and ability. Lila and John’s sons both finished the Kumon Math and Reading Program before entering high school - completing differential equations and advanced calculus problems with ease. Even though Lila was involved with Kumon both as a parent and a center assistant for many years, taking the leap to becoming a center owner was still intimidating. However, the extensive support she watched her husband receive, as well as startup cost assistance up to $31,000 put her nerves at ease.

“I am looking forward to continuing this journey as a Kumon Instructor to provide children in my community the academic advantage to compete in today’s world,” said Lila Basco. “My vision is to create as many future leaders as possible through The Kumon Method, regardless of ability, age, and race or cultural and economic backgrounds.”
