Zabka Takes Care Of The Environment And Supports The Local Labor Market. State-of-Art Cold And Freezer Store In Komornikach Is Already Running

September 29, 2020 // Franchising.com // Aiming to improve its logistic chain, Zabka Polska launched a cold and freezer store in w Komorniki, in the Greater Poland region. The facility is wholly designated to store products requiring controlled temperature, mainly daily products and frozen food. Three cold chambers, a freezer, space for goods receipt and issue have the total area of almost 7000 square meters. The store is equipped with an extremely efficient and environment-friendly state-of-art cooling installation. This investment is going to have positive impact upon the quality of the products offered in Zabka chain and also upon the speed of deliveries to the stores.

The new facility is located at 8B Krzysztofa Kolumba Street in Komorniki, placed just 3 km from the existing logistic center in Plewiska in the Greater Poland region. It supports the regon of Pozna and handling terminals in western part of Poland, i.e. in Wroclaw, Legnica, Zielona Góra, Gorzów Wielkopolski and Szczecin.

The store is equipped with state-of-art cooling installation of booster type using ecological and highly efficient CO2 cooling agent, characterized by the lowest greenhouse effect generating potential in the group of cooling agents. The installation has cooling capacity near to 800kW in the temperature of 0°C and freezing capacity of over 220 kW in the temperature of -26°C, which at the same time makes it one of the biggest installations of this type in Poland. Moreover, the system is equipped with an advanced heat recovery system used for glycol-based defrosting and heating of the freezer’s floor and the condenser sprinkling system guaranteeing maximum level of reliability, particularly on hot days. The entire installation was carefully custom-designed for Zabka chain by a team of best engineers and contractors.

We in Zabka attach great attention to proper organization and application of state-of-art solutions in transport and logistic. Their quality determines proper supply of our stores operating across the country, which contributes to enhanced satisfaction of our franchisees and eventually also of our customers. We attach great attention to reduction of the impact of our activities upon the natural environment; therefore, we introduce pro-ecological solutions also in the area of logistic. The transcritical r744 cooling system applied in the Komorniki facility, based on natural CO2 cooling agent, not only provides the possibility to achieve very low freezing temperature values and guarantees safety of people and of product, but also allows for energy savings in the range of 35% compared to traditional systems and for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions – says Adam Manikowski, Vice President of the Board for Operations in Zabka Polska.

The pro-ecological solutions implemented in the Komorniki store allow for reduction of the impact on the natural environment. Both in the warehouse rooms and in the offices, energy-saving LED light sources were installed, and the cooling system is supplied with CO2, i.e. a natural agenct with the lowest greenhouse effect generating potential in the group of cooling agents. The applied solutions are going to allow for reduction of emissions of harmful CO2 into the environment, equal to emissions generated by a passenger car riding over 21 million kilometers annually .

The launch by Zabka of the new facility in Komorniki will also support the local labor market. Eventually the warehouse is going to employ 50 Zabka workers, and at least the same number of people will be employed in the companies cooperating with the chain.

Zabka constantly invests in systems supporting the logistic and the entire supply chain. Presently, it is introducing changes related to the processes on the interface between stores and logistic centres. Under the framework of the e-Logistic project, it has been implementing an electronic document flow across the entire Logistic Department. The introduced changes enable electronic signing of 50-60 thousand documents daily on the average, and also their handling from any place where a given employee is at a given time. The administrative support of stores will be more efficient – approximately 35% of the time presently allocated to document handling and archiving is going to be assigned to other activities. Moreover, the electronic document flow is going to help to reduce paper waste – annually by almost a carriage full of paper, i.e. 6257 boxes.

The logistic system of Zabka Polska presently operates 5 logistic centers and 21 handling terminals. Deliveries to chain’s stores are carried out across Poland six days a week. Over 80 per cent of the stores are logistically supported every second day. The chain constantly improves its logistic services, also by undertaking several actions in logistic centers themselves, with due account taken of ecological aspects. Zabka performs - among others - automation of warehouses (automatic battery charging, cooling monitoring etc.), and recently it has completed the installation of LED illumination systems in the distribution centers and battery rooms for carts with a battery management system. This year Zabka purchased two fully electric Volkswagen e-Crafter delivery vans, which are going to be tested by the chain in Warsaw and in Poznan, as part of daily deliveries to the stores in city centers in the locations with the heaviest traffic. Moreover, Zabka Polska has invested in its own electric car charging stations in the logistic centers in Nadarzyn and in Plewiska.
