St. Joseph Goodcents Stays in the Family As Former Manager Buys Uncle’s Location

November 22, 2023 // Franchising.com // DE SOTO, Kan. - When Jay Zbierski’s uncle asked him to work in his Goodcents restaurant, he knew it was a good opportunity. His job in a local pizza restaurant had become boring, so he decided to join his uncle’s business.

That was in 2010, and he’s still there. And on Nov. 14, he became the owner and operator of the Goodcents restaurant at 4315 Commonwealth Court in St. Joseph, Missouri – the restaurant formerly owned by his uncle.

Zbierski said he worked for his uncle for about five years and was named store manager. “I’ve been pretty much doing everything for several years, now, and that will continue as I become the owner-operator,” he said. “I’m there every day now, so the customers won’t notice anything different for a few months. We do plan to undertake a remodel a bit later and then we’ll have a grand reopening.”

Zbierski’s uncle, Randy Russell, is now semi-retired. Zbierski said it seemed like a natural progression for him to take over the restaurant. “Goodcents is a corporation that feels like a family-based business. When you call the corporate headquarters, a real person answers and they help you as quickly as they can – which is quick!” he said. “The support you get from the company is key and made this an easy decision for me.”

“Goodcents feels like family. You don’t always find that in business, so I’m happy to be here and to have this opportunity to own my own restaurant,” Zbierski said.

Jami Bond, Goodcents’ vice president of franchise development, said she could not be happier for Zbierski. “We’ve been working together for years since he managed his uncle’s restaurant, and he’s a great, hard-working guy. All of us at Goodcents are very happy for Jay and look forward to helping him grow his business in St. Joseph.”

Zbierski and his wife of 10 years have two young children and live in St. Joseph.
