Synergy Homecare Fortifies Its Presence in Detroit’s Suburbs

January 15, 2025 // Franchising.com // Tempe, Ariz. – SYNERGY® HomeCare has announced the newest addition to its Greater Detroit network, SYNERGY HomeCare of Macomb-Grosse Pointe.

The company is owned and operated by the Kaufman family, namely James and his daughter and son, Samantha and Zackary. Each of the Kaufmans decided to leave behind their previous successful careers to build a family legacy together after noticing the need for reliable local home care when looking for help for their own loved ones.

Headquartered in St. Clair Shores, the company assists the communities of Macomb and Wayne counties. The Kaufmans and their team of professional caregivers will provide a wide variety of non-medical, in-home care services, from companion care to personal care and respite care.

Samantha and Zackary have experience providing volunteer care for the older members of their extended family and friends’ community, where they noticed the growing need for these services, particularly among Baby Boomers. U.S. Census statistics show that 10,000 Baby Boomers are turning 65 every day and that by 2030, there will be more than 70 million people over 65. According to the AARP, over 80% of this demographic reports wanting to remain in their own homes for as long as possible.

Before starting the family business, James, Samantha and Zackary had all pursued their own successful career paths. James, the primary owner and president of SYNERGY HomeCare of Macomb-Grosse Pointe, spent over 40 years across a variety of industries, holding leadership positions at start-up companies, global manufacturers, mobility transformation, and in franchising. Samantha, who will serve as VP of Business Development for the company, is leaving behind a career that started in public accounting and then moved into outside sales and territory management.  Samantha holds a BS degree in accounting and an MBA in business administration. Zackary, the agency’s VP of Operations, is an independent stock trader in foreign currency exchange markets and also has outside sales experience working in the solar energy industry.

The three each decided to leave their previous careers behind after witnessing James’ parents – Samantha and Zackary’s grandparents – try to navigate the care process. When trying to find a reliable home care provider for their loved ones, they were met with suboptimal results and were forced into taking on the mantle of being caregivers themselves. This experience opened the Kaufmans’ eyes to the fact that this is a difficult reality for many Americans and helped them realize they had the tools to solve the issue themselves in their local community.

“Our personal experience made us realize the ongoing and increasing need for trustworthy, caring and empathetic people who are willing to provide dedicated, professional care services,” said James. “Both my daughter and son had already been volunteering their time to offer this care on a much smaller scale, and we decided it was time to fully commit ourselves to this cause. Not only do we get to provide vital help to our community, but we also get to do so while building a family legacy together.”

Samantha and Zackary have long had a passion for caring for others, while James had a strong desire to work alongside his children as he progressed through his career. These desires naturally steered them towards the home care industry, where all three can achieve their professional goals together, while enhancing the quality of life for those around them.

“We don’t want to just be service providers, instead, we want to build meaningful relationships with every person we get to interact with, while creating unique care plans that address every person’s set of needs and lets them feel heard,” said Samantha. “Aging isn’t just about maintaining physical health, it’s also about enhancing emotional well-being and promoting a sense of belonging.”

Detroit’s northeastern suburbs are home to a high population of aging adults. Many older residents here need to rely on caregivers for additional assistance cooking, shopping, running errands, doing light housekeeping or going for walks. Some even require personal care, such as help with bathing, dressing or using the toilet.

“We’ve seen firsthand how unpredictable the aging process can be,” said Zackary. “With that in mind, we’re ready to be as flexible as possible to accommodate any family’s situation. Regardless of the scale of the need, we’ll be there to provide dedicated, reliable care.”
