Jackson Hewitt Reminds Taxpayers to Check W-2s for Accuracy

Forms will Arrive Soon as Deadline for Employers to Send W-2s is February 2

PARSIPPANY, N.J., Jan. 29 // PRNewswire-FirstCall // -- Millions of taxpayers will soon receive their Form W-2 wage statements in the mail, if they haven't already received them via an electronic W-2 download service. Form W-2 is one of the most important documents for preparing an income tax return, and employers must mail these forms no later than February 2, 2009. Jackson Hewitt Tax Service(R) reminds taxpayers to review each and every Form W-2 for accuracy and offers taxpayers other tips on what to do once they receive their W-2s.

"With today's economic situation, we anticipate that many taxpayers will be looking to file early, especially if they expect a refund. It's wise to get started now to receive that refund even sooner," said Mark Steber, vice president of tax resources at Jackson Hewitt. "The most anticipated document by taxpayers this time of year is the Form W-2. If taxpayers have not received their W-2 statements by early February, they should contact their employers."

Jackson Hewitt encourages taxpayers to:

  • Verify that the reported earnings on the statement match year-end pay stubs
  • Confirm that their Social Security number is correct
  • Ensure they receive Form W-2s from every employer for whom they worked in 2008, even if they were employed for only a day or two and even if the employer went out of business
  • Double check that other pertinent information is correct, such as their name and address

"If taxpayers do not want to wait to receive their W-2 statements in the mail, they may also be able to access this information through Jackson Hewitt's electronic W-2 download service," said Steber. "With this feature, there is no need to wait to receive a paper W-2. Consumers can find out if their W-2s are available for download on the Jackson Hewitt web site or by visiting any of our knowledgeable tax preparers."

In addition to electronic W-2 downloading, Jackson Hewitt offers free electronic-filing (IRS e-file) with paid tax preparation. E-filing an income tax return is not only faster, it is more accurate and includes a confirmation of receipt by the IRS.

When scheduling an appointment with a knowledgeable tax preparer, taxpayers should also keep in mind other important items to bring to the appointment such as a social security card, a driver's license, information on education expenses, medical and dental expenses, records of cash and non-cash charitable donations, and more. Jackson Hewitt provides a list of the documents needed in the "Tax Preparation, What To Bring" section of its web site.
