“If you have one of this shower heads that the bottom and top are fused and will not come apart, replace it,” says Beall. Cleaning a shower head is a two-part-procedure: dumping out the water-borne debris and then soaking away the iron stains and lime. “In most cases, says Beall, “you will have to remove the shower head to clean it by unscrewing it from the chrome angled pipe coming through the wall.

“The clothes washer screen is perhaps the most consistently clogged of all the screens in appliances and spigots,” says Beall who has 25 years of knowledge that he shares with readers from around the world. “And if your dishwasher takes forever to fill, a clogged inlet screen restricting the water flow may be the reason.”

Shower Heads

Tip #1 After removing the shower head, look down into the threaded collar for a screen that can be cleaned. Clean out any sediment with a pick or needle.

Tip #2 If that’s not the problem, disassemble the shower head if you can. Unscrew the base nut with an adjustable wrench or pliers.

Tip #3 Lay the parts on a flat surface so none can get lost. Clean any parts with debris stuck to them. The only way to remove lime buildup from the tiny holes in the shower is to dissolve it. Vinegar works fine. Heat the vinegar (do not boil) and pour into a bowl. Put the shower end head down into the vinegar and leave for no more than 1 hour.

Tip #4 Soaking the head overnight will ruin the finish and metal. Do not add baking soda. Though the fizzing is impressive, the baking soda neutralizes the acidity that dissolves the lime.

Washer Screen

Tip #1 The screens are either in the washer itself (in the solenoid, accessed only from the back), where the hoses attach, or in the hoses themselves.

Tip #2 Use a small screwdriver or pick to pull out the screen.

Tip #3 Clean it as necessary or replace it. Never throw the screens away. Their purpose is to keep waterborne debris from jamming the solenoids. Debris can jam the solenoid closed or open-either way, it interferes with the operation of the machine.

Trade Secret: There is no requirement to leave the screens where you find them. They can be moved any location, just so it is before the water enters the washing machine.

Dishwasher Inlet Screen

Tip #1 Open the lower access door at the bottom of the dishwasher and locate the inlet valve solenoid, typically on the bottom left. In some cases you may have to pull the washer out and put it on its back to have access to the solenoid.

Tip #2 Locate the solenoid valve, remove the inlet hose, and then unscrew the brass angle fitting. Pop the screen out with a pick or small screwdriver, and clean or replace it.

Tip #3 Reassemble the parts in the reverse order.
