Robotic Lawn Mowing Franchise Grows by More Than 100 Percent During COVID Pandemic

American business spirit thrives during COVID-19 crisis

June 19, 2020 // Franchising.com // DURHAM, N.C. - Grass isn’t the only green growing for Mowbot, the nation’s premier robotic lawnmowing service.

The North Carolina-based franchise has grown by 160 percent in 2020 over 2019, and that’s just in the first four months…during a global pandemic!

So far in 2020, eight new franchises and 24 territories have been sold across the country. Most of that was done virtually, while cities were in lockdown mode, proving how much excitement there is about the opportunity to own a piece of a company that is disrupting the $99.5 -billion-dollar lawn care industry.

Robotic lawnmowers have been all the rage in Europe for years, but now the cutting-edge technology is taking the U.S. by storm, and the pandemic isn’t slowing things down.

Innovation In Adversity

Mowbot CEO Tony Hopp says the young company had aggressive growth plans ready to roll for 2020, hoping to add 24 new franchises for the year. When COVID hit, the tech savvy company quickly converted to virtual Discovery Days and held consistently full classes for prospective franchise owners. In mid-April, when the country had slowed to a crawl, Mowbot had its largest (virtual) Discovery Day ever.

“We closed six deals in one week. Paperwork was flying! I never imagined such a thing would happen,” exclaimed Hopp.

Not only does Mowbot offer business ownership in an emerging green technology market, with unlimited growth potential, at a great price; Hopp believes there is something else at play in their record-setting growth…the indomitable American entrepreneurial spirit.

“I think this is proof of how the world works,” explained Hopp. “When there is adversity, there is also innovation, just like during the Great Depression. People scrape and scratch and grab and tug their way out. And that’s what we are seeing; there are people out there swinging for the fences.”

Why Buy Now?

While many put business growth and spending on pause, business partners Jared Gavzy and Steve Weiss, in the New York City metro area, pushed forward with their investment in Mowbot. Having lived through 9/11, the native New Yorkers who live 20 minutes from the epicenter of COVID-19, understood the world would change, but also needed to keep moving - and mowing!

“We know we can’t live locked in place. We know there is still a need for lawn care for our properties and that means mowing,” said Gavzy.

With more than 30 years in the landscape industry, they were willing to take a calculated risk because they knew their market, realized the robotic mower would benefit them and their customers, and figured if they didn’t buy the territories they wanted, someone else would. Purchasing the franchise during the pandemic is increasing their business.

“What better time to introduce this service than now? Mowbot can replace three men, a truck, and a trailer coming through your yard and neighborhood, which is even more appealing to people right now as everyone keeps their distance,” said Gavzy.

How Does It Work?

The battery-operated bot, manufactured by Husqvarna, the world’s leading outdoor equipment manufacturer, lives in homeowners’ yards and uses battery power, GPS, and artificial intelligence to mow lawns every day (and night), rain or shine. Its use of green technology cuts down on pollution, disrupting the $99.5 billion dollar lawn care industry with a cost effective and environmentally friendly alternative.
