L&L Hawaii’s First National SPAM® Musubi Day Is A “Six Ton” Success With 12,000 Pounds Of The Iconic Snack Consumed
September 03, 2021 // Franchising.com // Honolulu, HI - L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, the popular Hawaiian-style comfort food restaurant franchise, estimates that over six tons of SPAM® musubis, or approximately 24,000, were ordered and consumed across the U.S. on the inaugural National SPAM® Musubi Day, which took place on August 8, 2021. Placing that many SPAM® musubis end-to-end would measure over 7,000 feet in length, or the equivalent to 20 Statue of Liberties stacked on top of each other (or 38 Aloha Towers)!
L&L introduced its concept of plate lunches - two scoops of rice, a scoop of macaroni salad and an entrée - on the U.S. mainland in 1999. The SPAM® musubi was also introduced as part of its menu offerings, helping popularize the Hawaiian hand-held snack across the country. The restaurant established National SPAM® Musubi Day to mark the growing popularity of the snack. The occasion was honored with multiple proclamations by Hawaii State Governor David Ige, City and County of Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino, Hawaii County Mayor Mitch Roth, and Kauai County Mayor Derek Kawakami.
“We were overwhelmed by the response of our customers across the U.S. in support of the very first L&L Hawaii National SPAM® Musubi Day,” said L&L CEO and President Elisia Flores. “We are looking forward to this annual celebration and are thrilled to be the brand that brings SPAM® musubi across the nation.”
