Liberty Tax Drives Profitable Growth with Successful Franchise Owners

After a life-long career in the grocery business, John Perea was looking to retire and pursue a new opportunity when he ran across Liberty Tax, then known for its tagline “We make taxes fun.”

“Liberty Tax was a small company at the time,” recalls Perea. “I loved taxes, and I thought anyone that puts that out there, I want to meet and talk with, and see if I can work with them.”

Some 16 years and two Liberty Tax territories later, the Santa Fe franchisee has never stopped having fun while he gets the job done. He is part of a vibrant base of franchise owners operating more than 2,700 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada.

“If you work hard and follow the system, you will become profitable very quickly,” says Perea, previously a director for a large grocery chain, who holds a business degree, with an accounting minor.

Founded in 1997, Liberty Tax is the nation’s third-largest tax preparer, with best-in-class tax software and new mobile and franchisee-facing apps that allow owners to run their business from the palm of their hand. The brand’s hallmark support has never wavered, notes Perea. In his first year of doing business, Perea says he logged over 300 tax and tech support questions—each answered with patience and a willingness to help.

“Even with the size of the company now, our CEO (Brent Turner) is always available,” Perea says. “If you email him, he will email you back—there are no if’s, and’s, or but’s.”

Liberty Tax has led the way throughout the ongoing pandemic, quickly expanding in March—in the heat of tax season—to implement safety protocols and offer drop-off and remote tax preparation services. Daily webinars and emails kept franchisees informed continuously.

“It amazed me how quickly Liberty reacted,” Perea says. “We had a lot of communication, and we were never asking, ‘What should I do?’ because that question had already been answered.”

Perea’s success provided him with the path to growth, adding a restaurant franchise, Liberty Loan and, most recently, Rocket Mortgage to his portfolio.

Liberty Tax’s expanded menu of services for franchisees includes opportunities with auto insurance, Medicare, virtual accounting and bookkeeping, credit repair, and consumer loans.  There is a solution to utilizing your location for other revenue streams.

At Liberty Tax, you don’t just buy a business; franchise owners are part of a business culture that values hard work and having fun while providing a vital community service. Liberty Tax balances strong growth, best business practices, social responsibility, and a fulfilling life experience for franchisees.

Being a Liberty Tax franchisee provides Perea with the freedom to travel and spend more time with his family outside of tax season and support his community and church.

Perea’s offices serve the Hispanic community, filing just under 3000 returns annually. Loyal customers enjoy a festive atmosphere with food, entertainment, and giveaways for clients and a team approach with his staff.

“We’ve developed a fun place to come and get your taxes done,” says Perea. “Kids remember it, and now I have some kids that are doing their taxes here with us.”
