Franchise History

The Humpty's concept was founded in 1977 by Don and Jan Koenig, a couple who had no restaurant experience but did have a background in retail sales and customer service. The restaurant business was the result of an earlier experience with a small 50-seat restaurant in the tiny hamlet of Blackie, Alberta in 1974. By 1976 this small business had graduated to a Calgary catering company that also owned three small soup and sandwich shops. Don and Jan spent a year researching the breakfast market and decided there was an opportunity for an all day breakfast business in the Calgary market. They converted one of the sandwich shops to the first Humpty's Egg Place in November 1977. Although exclusively breakfast; sales tripled in the first year from the soup and sandwich business.
