Food Warriors Coming to Dover

Dickey's to host Association of Independent Competitive Eaters in Pulled Pork Eating Contest

June 02, 2008 // Franchising.com // (Dover, Del.) –On June 14 at 1 p.m., Dickey's Barbecue Pit in Dover will team up with the New York-based Association of Independent Competitive Eaters to host the first ever pulled-pork sandwich showdown featuring some of the nation's top competitive eaters.

Top professional eaters from New York, New Jersey and the entire Eastern seaboard will set their stomachs and sights on the Northeastern Pulled Pork Sandwich Showdown Championship. Expected to compete are the nation's number one-ranked Food Warrior, Gentleman Joe Menchetti from Connecticut and the nation's third-ranked Food Warrior, Ian "The Invader" Hickman from Virginia.

Anyone is welcome to compete against the 'Food Warriors' for the $850 in prize money and the prestigious title of Northeast Pulled Pork Sandwich Showdown Champion.

"The pulled pork sandwich will finally take center stage and be given its due recognition," said AICE Chairman Arnie "Chowhound" Chapman. "Folks from the South and the West and those Northeasterners lucky enough to have a Dickey's Barbecue Pit near them know about the joy and delight of a great pulled pork sandwich. The advent of the nation's first championship pulled pork eating contest will be a grand celebration of the great American cuisine known as barbecue."

Long-held Southern traditions of etiquette and manners will be in full observance as eaters will be required to consume their many sandwiches while adhering to "Picnic style" rules. Picnic style requires competitors to eat the food as it is presented to them. They are not allowed to alter the food in any way that will make consumption faster or easier.

"We are excited to host this event," said Adolfo "Archie" Bengzon, Owner/Operator of Dickey's Dover location. "I can't think of a better group to put our 67 year old barbecue recipe to the test."
