Tax Education Series Kicks Off Today in New York City

PARSIPPANY, N.J., Feb. 19 // PRNewswire-FirstCall // -- Jackson Hewitt Tax Service(R) today announced a partnership with the Magic Johnson Foundation and its Magic Johnson Community Empowerment Centers (MJCEC), which offer educational and other resources to communities around the country, to provide a series of comprehensive tax information seminars within local communities of six major metropolitan areas. The free seminars are aimed at educating individuals about basic tax information and budget planning.

"Jackson Hewitt is committed to financial literacy community outreach where we connect key tax information and basic money management to help taxpayers as they navigate the path to their financial success," said Michael Yerington, president and CEO of Jackson Hewitt. "Partnering with the Magic Johnson Foundation and its Magic Johnson Community Empowerment Centers is a great way to provide helpful information at the grassroots level that will affect individuals and families across the country."

The first seminar takes place today in New York City at the Magic Johnson Community Empowerment Center located in Taino Towers, a non-profit housing development made up of approximately 700 apartment units under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Members of the community will receive tips and information on understanding and organizing key tax-related documents, overlooked credits and deductions, explanation of tax rates and filing status, as well as basic money management tips, including budgeting and saving. Each seminar attendee will also receive free access to the Jackson Hewitt Money Manager, a Web-based home budgeting and personal finance tool that provides a convenient way to help users create and manage a budget and detailed savings plan.

"These tax information seminars provided by Jackson Hewitt will help community residents that come to our Magic Johnson Community Empowerment Centers become more knowledgeable about the process of filing an income tax return," said Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Founder and Chairman of the Magic Johnson Foundation. "Ideally it will help empower them to achieve greater success in planning their financial future."

The Tax Information/Financial Literacy seminar series will run through March, with the remaining events held at MJCEC's in Sacramento, Houston, Chicago, New Orleans and Cleveland. Jackson Hewitt and the Magic Johnson Foundation expect the six 90-minute seminars to reach more than an estimated 750 individuals.
