Mathnasium TriMathlon: A Math Contest You Don’t Have to Be a Genius to Enjoy

About 4,000 Students Across U.S. Expected to Answer 100,000 Math Questions; $150,000 in Gifts and Prizes Awarded, Including $37,000 Donated to Schools Nationwide

LOS ANGELES - October 08, 2013(BUSINESS WIRE) - The Mathnasium TriMathlon isn’t your average math competition, because it’s not just for genius-level students. It is for everyday kids who enjoy math and want to give back to their local communities.

About 4,000 children are expected to compete in this year’s TriMathlon, to be held on Oct. 19-20 at more than 200 participating Mathnasium locations across the U.S. Contest participants are expected to answer more than 100,000 math questions before the testing concludes.

"We wanted to do something different with our TriMathlon contest and welcome children at all levels to test their skills, have some fun, and win prizes for themselves and their local communities. Our philosophy at Mathnasium is that virtually every child can become good at math; the Mathnasium TriMathlon reflects this perfectly. The TriMathlon contest is free to enter for any child in grades 2-5 who can make it to one of our participating centers. At the Mathnasium TriMathlon, every child is a winner!" said Larry Martinek, Chief Instructional Officer at Mathnasium.

In this year’s Mathnasium TriMathlon, prizes will be awarded to all participants, including donations made to local schools for each question a student answers correctly on the TriMathlon test, allowing individual students to "give back" to the schools. These donations, either through the website DonorsChoice.org or via direct donation, are expected to total about $37,000, including those earned on behalf of the TriMathlon national winners. Other gifts and awards will bring the total prize fund to about $150,000.

The TriMathlon consists of three events:

  • Magic Squares, where students are awarded points for developing their own math problems.
  • The Counting Game, which tests students' ability to count from any number, to any number, by any number.
  • Mental Math Workout, which asks students to solve problems without a pencil and paper in order to show off their "number sense."

Public, private, and home schooled students in grades 2-5 – at all levels of math ability – are invited to participate free of charge and do not have to be enrolled at a Mathnasium learning center to do so.

For those competing for top prizes, the 1st place winners at each grade level will be invited to move on to the national finals. Prizes of $1,000, $500, and $250 will be awarded to local schools on behalf of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place national winners at each grade level. All participants, regardless of how they place on the exam, will receive a free downloadable game from Lakeshore Learning Materials together with other prizes and certificates of participation. National winners will receive Lakeshore gift cards.

Prep materials, including a practice test, are available on the Mathnasium TriMathlon website (www.mathnasiumtriathlon.com), where students can also register to participate at their respective local locations.
