The Power of Performance Groups: A Franchisee's Journey to Success
The journey to success looks just a little bit different for each and every franchise owner. Right at Home franchisees come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. This means that every franchise owner experiences their own unique twists and turns on the pathway to success.
But our franchisees all have one thing in common. They all tell us that the Right at Home support structure has been a true game-changer. As a Senior Business Performance Coach for Right at Home, Daniel Bourne is a pillar of this support structure.
Daniel dropped by for a recent Tuesday Talk with Chief Growth and Strategic Operations Officer Brady Schwab. They discussed the central role that Right at Home Performance Groups play in supporting franchisees on their journey to success.
An Overview of Performance Coaching
Before digging into Performance Groups, let’s take a quick moment to highlight the essential role that coaching plays in the Right at Home support structure.
Daniel explains that he and his fellow business performance coaches work with Right at Home franchise owners all over the U.S. In fact, every single franchise owner has access to a business performance coach.
Daniel notes that he’ll meet regularly with franchisees throughout the year, “to go over various KPIs, help them set goals, do some education around some of our best practices–just really work with them to make sure they're following the Right at Home model.”
Coaching and Performance Groups
Performance Groups are an extension of Right at Home’s commitment to coaching. Daniel points out that every single Performance Group is overseen by a Right at Home facilitator.
“If you're in a performance group,” explains Daniel, “your facilitator is also your business coach. And so I know exactly what [franchise owners] are striving for…. And I can help them achieve whatever goal or commitment they've placed for the group.”
But what exactly is a Performance Group?
Performance Groups are unique to the Right at Home support system. These groups are made up of select franchise owners, who come together periodically to share their experiences, challenges, and successes.
Personal Growth and Peer Support
Daniel points out that business owners don’t always enjoy the benefits that come with having a professional peer group. As a franchise owner, “you're at the top of the organization, and you don't have a peer,” says Daniel. “So performance groups allow you to work with somebody who is your equal.”
In this setting, franchisees get a true sense of community and of mutual support. Daniel notes that “within these performance groups, owners get super close, and the whole idea is to be super open and vulnerable about your business and what's going on and what's happening.”
Each member of a Performance Group is a franchise owner–somebody who can understand your experiences as a business leader and provide insights from their own experiences in the same field. In short, membership in a Performance Group gives you a chance to engage with your peers in ways that may not otherwise be possible.
Structured Meetings and Accountability
Of course, there’s more to it than just sharing trade secrets. Performance groups help keep our franchisees focused, accountable, and up to date on everything that’s happening across the Right at Home network and across our broader home care industry.
Daniel tells us that Performance Group members will meet four times a year–twice in person and twice through video conference. This is an opportunity for members to channel their collective experience and knowledge into meaningful action.
These meetings, says Daniel, provide a forum “where you're working on goal setting, you're working on best practices, you're leaning on each other to help solve any burning issues that you may have, and working together to achieve your goals.”
Meetings are structured to encourage improvement, advancement, and growth. Every meeting includes several key agenda items:
- A general update from each group member on the last quarter
- A “Bright Ideas” brainstorming session
- A time slot dedicated to discussing any real-world challenges owners may be facing
“And the last main component,” says Daniel, “is goal setting. We usually end the meeting with: ‘Okay, what are my commitments to the group that I'm going to accomplish? What are the goals that I'm looking toward in the next quarter?’”
Performance Group Dynamics
The way that Right at Home assembles its performance groups really drives home our company-wide focus on creating success through strong personal relationships. There are 14 Performance Groups operating across the country. However, only two of these groups–in Texas and California–are regional. The other 12 Performance Groups are made up of owners from all over the country.
“So it's not necessarily regionally based,” Daniel says. “We try to base it off of personalities, goals, skill sets, those types of things.”
There are some important prerequisites for membership. Performance group participants must be franchise owners with at least one year in business, and all applicants must complete a financial training course called Profit Mastery.
“Outside of that,” says Daniel, “it's just finding the right match for the group based on what you're looking to accomplish, your market, and what's going on in your area.”
Real-Life Success Stories
The impact of performance group participation is actually quite tangible, says Daniel.
“I can tell you, anecdotally,” he says, “any owner that's in a performance group has said their business has improved from joining–their mindset, ideas, processes, efficiencies, everything.”
The numbers support this anecdotal observation. Daniel notes that last year, Performance Group members saw roughly 3% more in revenue than the general network of franchise owners. A group of owners in Daniel’s Performance Group did their own study in 2024. They found that they collectively improved their own profit margins by 4.5% during the time of their Performance Group membership.
Creating Lasting Bonds
Consistent with the broader Right at Home culture, our performance groups have also helped to foster truly meaningful, professional, and personal relationships. Daniel notes that Performance Groups have often served as a meeting place for future project collaborators, business partners, and even lifelong friends.
“I've got owners that go on family trips together,” says Daniel. “They'll go and visit their offices, take their kids with them. They find their people, and it's others who can relate to the struggles that they're going through, and help them celebrate the successes.”
