Multi-Unit Franchisee Insight – Hiring, Training & Problem Employees

We talk to successful multi-unit operators constantly here at Franchise Update Media. These busy on-the-go people share great insight and wisdom with us through our profile stories in Multi-Unit Franchisee magazine. Here, from our archives, are some insightful responses from some of these franchisees.

How do you hire and fire?
Take time to find the right fit for our culture. When it is not working out, we move on and have a suitable replacement ready to go.

How do you train and retain employees?
In today’s tight labor market, retention is critical to being able to maintain and grow your infrastructure as the business scales up. We try to align incentives at all levels of the company to the unit-level economics and give a meaningful stake in the outcome. When the business grows, we all grow together.
Shirin Kanji, multi-unit franchisee of Rent-A-Centers, Marriott/Starwood, Hilton, Hyatt, BurgerFi, and Carstar

How do you hire and fire?
We look for people who are committed and passionate about the restaurant business and the brand they’re interviewing for. People that don’t either consistently honor their word in performance or lack some type of passion have a short tenure here.

How do you train and retain employees?
We rely on our franchisors to develop training courses to support people in how to run the brand. Then we spend a lot of resources focusing on leadership training.

What about problem employees?
There’s always a conversation with specific objectives put into place. We come to the table with an eye toward supporting them and their development. It’s up to the individual to choose that. If they don’t after a certain amount of time, they’re not going to be here.
Mike Hamra, multi-unit franchisee of Wendy’s, Panera Bread, Noodles & Company, Holiday Inn Express

How do you hire and fire?
Very carefully. We use several different pre-screening tools and e-verify all candidates. We have hired HR staff to assist us with terminations.

How do you train and retain employees?
We provide the best training tools available for this business and we have a very attainable bonus program to earn more.

What about problem employees?
Every solution is different and requires a great deal of thought and consideration. Each employee is different and we deal with them on a case-by-case basis.
Eric Holm, multi-unit franchisee of Golden Corral, Krispy Kreme, Marriott Fairfield Inn & Suites
