As many of you know, we’re a distractible audience – you can’t get away with doing the same thing again and again. You have to constantly be reinventing your message and ways to present your material.   It’s what I love about this job but it’s also what makes it so challenging.

A friend of mine recently invited me to attend Engage(dot)net 3.0 for the second year in a row. I jumped at the opportunity. This conference brings top marketers together with money-strapped Silicon Valley non-profits and art/culture communities for a one-day marketing event.

The setting was the sun drenched Mexican Heritage Plaza in east San Jose. This year’s outstanding speakers included Sheila Bernus Dowd, International Social Media Manger at GoDaddy, as keynote and Mark Waxman, Chief Marketing Officer at CBIZ Inc., providing priceless one-on-one speed dating advice to attendees.

When I went last year it was to support my friend in the release of her new book.   But surprisingly, I found myself scribbling furiously as leading marketers shared invaluable nuggets on social media management and branding techniques.

The thing is, I’m a learner. Sometimes I get too busy and forget to make it a priority, but when I come across a learning opportunity that’s fresh and interesting everything lights up.

Ways to meet those challenges:

  • Always be mentally available when unexpected learning opportunities arise.
  • If you’re not already planning a scribble moment – Do It Now.
  • After a learning opportunity re-write notes you’ve made.
  • Pick at least 2 must-do ACTION items.
  • EXECUTE
