Franchising is pretty much all I’ve ever known. I actually started working at a smoothie franchise that was part of another chain when I was in college. I ended up becoming a franchise owner of that very same location. I sold it and invested in another frozen treat business by campus. And then, when the opportunity arose for me to invest in Smoothie Factory, I jumped on it. I knew from years of experience that this chain had the best product line and used the healthiest ingredients in the industry. Having a stake in that brand was incredibly appealing.
“I saw at an early age that we could do things much better in the smoothie business. I had researched the industry as a school project in the hotel and restaurant management program when I was a student at the University of Houston. There were a lot of mom-and-pop shops at the time. And they were using a lot of concentrates and purees. I was also a member of the 1992 Olympic Taekwondo team in Barcelona, and that was the catalyst for it all. I wanted something better after workouts; not the sugary stuff. We founded Smoothie Factory in 1996, and our customers recognized the quality of our ingredients from the very beginning. We started as a store operator, and we started franchising a year later. Today, with the best smoothies, value-priced nutritional supplements and fresh cold-squeezed juices, we have multiple revenue streams under one roof.
