How do you give your team room to innovate and experiment?I like to hand out projects to key team leaders and ask them to figure a better way to execute the task. Then I check on them every week. I do not micro-manage. If they have the passion and will needed, they will achieve the goal.
At your level, are you still involved in operations?Since I grew up in the restaurant business, being in a restaurant is very comforting. I like to interact with team members...

What is your business philosophy? If you take care of your team, they will take care of the customer.
Describe your management method or style: Servant leadership:1) "The first and most important choice a leader makes is the choice to serve, without which one's capacity to lead is severely limited." How To Improve Prospect Contact Rates: Get In The (Time) Zone! »

Michael Alston

Reaching prospects by phone is a frustrating and time-wasting process for both franchise development teams and the prospects they’re trying to reach. The vast expanse of the 50 states across 6 main time zones exacerbates the problem.
The largest study ever undertaken of online sales leads showed a shocking mismatch between normal business hours and the times franchise development teams are most likely to be available. The conclusion: most franchise sales teams and prospects are on different time schedules and pass each other like ships in the night.
For nationally available franchises, prospects will be distributed similarly to the U.S. population, which is heavily concentrated in the Eastern Time Zone (see map).

2018 Mega 99 Rankings »

Multi-Unit Franchisee

Each year we work with FRANdata to compile a list of the country’s largest multi-unit franchisee organizations. Based on total unit count, the rankings show not only the number of units these “mega” franchisees operate, but also their brands. While the list is dominated by food brands, it also includes non-food concepts such as business services (tax preparation), consumer services (automotive), and lodging. Building a multi-unit empire is a matter of taste, opportunity, passion, and comfort level. If you’re looking to expand and diversify your own franchise empire, study what the “big guys” are buying—it just might help you with your own growth choices in 2018.

The common consumer is mobile, interactive, and expects to have access to the content they want at the push of a button, or even a spoken word.
As emerging technologies make their way into the mainstream we, as franchise professionals, must be aware and prepared for them. Most important, the world wide web is changing. Several new technologies have been introduced making the web faster, safer, and more user-friendly...

Mastering The Psychology Of Buyers »

Steve Olson

Editor's note: After years of writing columns for our Franchise Update magazine, the author selected this column as one of his 3 all-time favorites. It's one of ours too, so we're rerunning it here (with updated numbers) as an FUSR "classic."
Once a salesman complained, "What an idiot! I can't believe my prospect went with our competition." In quizzing him about the lost candidate, the troubled rep was clueless about the buyer's motivations, concerns, and goals in owning a business. My question is, "Was it the buyer or the sales rep who was the idiot?"
In today's change-prone economy, sales pros gain the edge by moving directly into their prospect's world. They probe, read, adapt, and outsell their competition by fully understanding and responding to how their candidates think and behave...
