Taking Care Of Business: 2018 Multi-Unit Franchising Conference Gets It Done!  »

Kerry Pipes & Eddy Goldberg

The annual Multi-Unit Franchising Conference drew more than 1,600 attendees to Las Vegas this past April. Nearly 700 of them were multi-unit and multi-brand franchisees whose aggregate revenue topped $10 billion--and who plan to open a total of more than 2,000 new locations in the next two years, and 11,000 in the next five years. Quite a group!
Franchisees, franchisors, and suppliers gathered at Caesars Palace for the nation's largest multi-unit franchising event. Education, networking, and a packed Exhibit Hall provided ample opportunity for attendees to gain insights about their business, rekindle friendships, build new ones, and head home armed with valuable takeaways to help their organizations rise to the next level.
"The content of the conference was the best ever," said Therese Thilgen, CEO of Franchise Update Media, which hosts the yearly gathering...

At Franchise Update Media we have made it our business for more than three decades to be the premier authority and resource for franchise information, education, and opportunities. Through our two magazines, three conferences, four newsletters, and content-rich website, we continue to bring timely, relevant, and useful news and information to franchisees, franchisors, and opportunity seekers.
Over the years, we’ve developed a sense for spotting emerging trends in franchising. One such trend we’ve been tracking for years, and the reason for this inaugural newsletter, Franchise Update International Report, has been the rapid growth of international, cross-border franchising – much of it made possible by technology.
Franchise Update International Report will be similar in style to our other newsletters...

Success Stories Of Minorities In Franchising »

Eddy Goldberg

The previous How-To Franchising Guide story detailed the growing role of minorities in franchising and provided a list of online resources to help minorities enter and succeed in franchising. Since nothing speaks to success better than success itself, we present 3 short versions of profiles of franchisees who are making it. The full profiles appeared in Franchise Update Media’s Multi-Unit Franchisee magazine during the past few years. Since the profiles first were published, some of the details (number of units, brands they operate, etc.) may have changed, in most cases for the better!

2018 Mega 99 Rankings »

Multi-Unit Franchisee

Each year we work with FRANdata to compile a list of the country’s largest multi-unit franchisee organizations. Based on total unit count, the rankings show not only the number of units these “mega” franchisees operate, but also their brands. While the list is dominated by food brands, it also includes non-food concepts such as business services (tax preparation), consumer services (automotive), and lodging. Building a multi-unit empire is a matter of taste, opportunity, passion, and comfort level. If you’re looking to expand and diversify your own franchise empire, study what the “big guys” are buying—it just might help you with your own growth choices in 2018.

Benjamin Foley

Over the past few years, technological advancements have been growing at an accelerated rate. We've seen a shift from a desktop-dominated web to a mobile-dominated web. Users no longer schedule their lives around your schedule. With the advent of YouTube, Netflix, TiVo, and other streaming devices and technologies, users shape their world around their lives. The common consumer is mobile, interactive, and expects to have access to the content they want at the push of a button, or even a spoken word.
As emerging technologies make their way into the mainstream we, as franchise professionals, must be aware and prepared for them. Most important, the world wide web is changing. Several new technologies have been introduced making the web faster, safer, and more user-friendly...

Mastering The Psychology Of Buyers »

Editor's note: After years of writing columns for our Franchise Update magazine, the author selected this column as one of his 3 all-time favorites. It's one of ours too, so we're rerunning it here (with updated numbers) as an FUSR "classic."
Once a salesman complained, "What an idiot! I can't believe my prospect went with our competition." In quizzing him about the lost candidate, the troubled rep was clueless about the buyer's motivations, concerns, and goals in owning a business. My question is, "Was it the buyer or the sales rep who was the idiot?"
In today's change-prone economy, sales pros gain the edge by moving directly into their prospect's world. They probe, read, adapt, and outsell their competition by fully understanding and responding to how their candidates think and behave...

Shopping For Improvement »

Mystery shoppers find many brands doing better, but there's still a long way to go for many others
Franchisee recruitment is the cornerstone of any successful brand. It must be done right. It requires the right team, the right information, the right prospects, and the right follow-up. There must be a proven process in place that is followed and continually improved. But amazingly, year after year, franchise brands continue to fumble the fundamentals.
Whether it's providing incorrect or outdated information on a website or the lack of a quick (or any) telephone response, among other problems, many franchise development teams are still in dire need of improvement, according to this year's mystery shopping results.
