Fresh is the Focus at Beyond Juicery + Eatery
Mijo Alanis, co-founder of Beyond Juicery + Eatery, was always driven. By age 15 he was washing dishes at a restaurant and had a keen eye for customer satisfaction from the start. The years went by as he climbed the ladder of restaurant management – cook, manager, GM, bartender, server – all while having a honed in focus on what customers were eating...and not eating.
“I noticed customers were throwing away buns and fries,” he recalls. “They said they didn’t like feeling full and were trying to eat healthier.” One day he had a eureka moment when he remembered a juice bar at the foot of a mountain he often climbed in Arizona. “We didn’t have any eateries like this that offered fresh, healthy food in the Detroit area,” he says. His entrepreneurial spirit kicked in immediately.
In 2005, he launched the first Beyond Juicery + Eatery restaurant in Birmingham, Michigan. The location offered smoothies, salads, juices, and wraps. Alanis continued experimenting and enhancing the menu, even beginning an exclusive bottled juice line. “We were actually a little early to the health food market,” he says. “But by 2011, customers were asking, ‘How can I open my own location?’”
Franchising turned out to be the answer. Alanis had already opened four company-owned Beyond locations that were successfully operating. He’d created a proven concept with a cult following that could be replicated, and now because of growing demand, Beyond is primed to expand through franchising.
“Our first franchisee partnered with us in 2018, opening his first store in 2019 and today he operates three locations,” says Alanis. In fact, since beginning to franchise, Beyond Juicery has grown to 38 open locations in the greater Detroit and Cleveland markets, and there are 58 more stores in the pipeline.
Alanis says three core values drive the culture at Beyond Juicery + Eatery. “First, sweat the shirt, be willing to put the work in. Second, do what others won’t— with product quality, guest satisfaction and beyond—and third, be the best part of someone’s day,” he says. It’s a mixture of dedication, passion, and genuine care for customers.
